Is your life dull and predictable? Do things happen around you and to you, while you just plod on through, dodging the obstacles, going through the motions? Is it over six months since you laughed uncontrollably or tried something you hadn’t done before? Are you bored and unfulfilled?
If you answered yes to more than two of these questions it is highly likely that you have laid down the controls and put your life onto Auto pilot.
Auto pilot is easy to do. Sometimes we don’t even realise it’s happening. Routines get created, habits kick in and there is a comfortable familiarity to the monotony. Certainty makes us feel safe. We may not be having any fun or adventure, but at least we don’t have to take any chances.
We find passive ways to compensate. Diversions such as television, movies and social media can lure us into virtual adventures, friendships and excitement, but they do not match up against real life and real experiences.
Recently I caught up with a friend who lives in Paris for a few months of every year. Paris is her passion, so she makes it happen! She rents an apartment there, has wonderful adventures every day, and shares them with the world on her well frequented blog.*
A business colleague of mine has a passion for motorcycles. He works hard running his own business during the week and then on the weekends when chores are done, he dons the leathers and helmet, and goes for a hoon on his bike, to wherever he ends up!
I walk five kilometres every morning, but I go a different route each day. Each time I see different people walking their dogs, jogging etc. I see different houses, gardens, cars, and smell different breakfasts cooking, flowers etc. I never know from day to day what I might see, hear or witness. My walks are fun and interesting as they have become an experience instead of just a daily ritual.
What would happen if you started to make a few changes? If you made a small effort, to shift your routine around so it isn’t so ordinary? You don’t have to travel overseas to do it, or buy a new vehicle…start small and see where it leads you.
Perhaps you sit on the same train carriage each day, or meet for lunch at the same café? What if you don’t tomorrow? What if you get onto another carriage or walk around the block to a new café you haven’t tried before? Perhaps you will bump into someone you know? Maybe you will overhear an interesting conversation that sparks an interest? Perhaps you will discover that the new café has nice coffee too? Whatever the result, it will spice up your day to some extent. It will shift the monotony.
When we introduce change and variety to our lives, it’s like waking up. Our senses become more alert, our brains kick over and things become more interesting. We begin to look for new experiences, notice things we hadn’t noticed before and feel more energetic and motivated.
What can you think of in your life that you can shift to add some variety?
Start small and see where it takes you. Take hold of the controls, turn off the Auto-Pilot and begin to experience your life again instead of just watching it roll by.
Say goodbye to ordinary…you deserve better!!!
